CFIGS Welcomes Geoscience Students to Curtin University

The Geological Society of Australia Earth Sciences Student Symposium - Western Australia GESSS WA held its 2025 conference at Curtin University.

As a continuing platinum sponsor, CFIGS was pleased to support this student-run conference that allows Honours, Masters and PhD students to present their research to the local scientific community.

This successful event created opportunities for emerging scientists to share their research, build professional networks, and develop key skills that will shape the future of geoscience.

Keynote speaker, Dr Hugo Olierook, Deputy Director at CFIGS, provided a presentation: “Past, present and future of a PhD student”

Key messages from the talk included:

Prior to your PhD: We’re all unique. Embrace others’ differences

During your PhD: Say “yes” often [to opportunities]. But it’s also ok to sometimes say “No”

After your PhD: Your career does not have to define your life

CFIGS is investing in the development of the future leaders in geoscience.
